Chin Augmentation – also referred to as chin enlargement – is an effective means to enhance facial definition and build a more exact profile. This is a simple surgical procedure, which uses implants to change the underlying structure of the face, providing a better balance for the facial features. Often, this procedure may be combined with rhinoplasty (surgically refining and correcting the shape of the nose) to help balance the facial proportions.

Alternative methods that can be used instead of or in conjunction with prosthetic implants include injectable fillers and the surgical alteration of the jaw bone to achieve additional definition.

Chin augmentation, otherwise referred to as chin implant surgery at the Cadogan Clinic is a relatively straightforward procedure carried out by using an implant to enhance the shape of the chin and improve facial balance and definition. Chin augmentation using surgical implants can alter the underlying structure of the face, providing better balance to the facial features. The specific medical terms mentoplasty and genioplasty are used to refer to the reduction and addition of material to a patient's chin.

Chin implants at Cadogan Clinic can benefit men and women alike; however, not everyone is a suitable candidate for this procedure. For chin implant surgery to be successful, your jaw and teeth must function properly. If your chin is mildly weak and your jaw and teeth are functioning well, chin implants may be an ideal way to achieve the look you want. It's also important that your immune system function well to reduce the risk of infection after surgery.

A good result can also be achieved non-surgically through the use of soft tissue fillers such as Juvederm to try to create a stronger chin line, however these are a temporary solution. A chin implant will provide a more permanent, lasting solution.

Chin implant surgery at Cadogan Clinic is a very simple procedure and is carried out under a general anesthetic on a day case basis, which means no overnight stay is required.  The procedure itself normally takes between 45 minutes to an hour and involves making a very discreet incision from inside the mouth, or underneath the chin through which the implant is inserted and positioned to achieve the desired effect. The surgical excision is then secured with dissolvable stitches and a dressing is applied to support the implant and to reduce the risk of infection whilst you heal.

Depending on the treatment plan decided at your initial consultation, an incision will either be made inside the mouth along the inside of the lower lip (so invisible to the eye) or discreetly under the chin, so is hidden well.  You may be given a support garment at the end of the surgery which is worn both day and night for a week following your procedure to help control swelling and reduce possible movement of the implant. You may experience mild discomfort for up to five days’ post-surgery, however most patients can resume their normal day to day activities after one week.  Your surgeon will advise you to refrain from strenuous exercise for around six weeks as it can take up to this point to see your final results.

The cost of chin augmentation at the Cadogan Clinic starts from £4,400, however this will depend on your particular case. This can only be determined during a consultation with your surgeon, and following that an accurate price can be quoted.

Complications are uncommon though bruising can occur and infection can occur although incredibly rare.  Altered sensation in the area is to be expected but will usually return between six and twelve weeks’ post-surgery.

Scar visibility can be greatly impacted by the quality of the surgeon you choose, as well as the level of aftercare you receive. In the hands of a skilled surgeon the scar can be positioned very discreetly, whilst our expert scar minimisation team can provide you with the tools and techniques to enhance the healing process.
