As we age, the skin on our face starts to lose its elasticity and begins to sag. Creases can become deeper and the jaw and neckline start to droop.

Fat on the face, which makes it look plump and smooths out wrinkles, is absorbed as the years go by, so the face appears more gaunt. The rate at which this ageing process occurs varies from person to person and can be a source of frustration for those who want to look as young as they feel.

Facelift surgery refers to a group of cosmetic procedures that give patients a more youthful facial appearance by tightening the underlying tissue and smoothing out the loose skin on the face. Around 5,000 men and women in the UK choose facelifts each year, typically in their 40s-70s, and it is one of the most common procedures performed in the UK.

The techniques to address this appearance can be both surgical and non-surgical. Traditional facelift surgery, also known as rhytidectomy, entails your surgeon making an incision along your hairline (to ensure scars remain well hidden as they fade), before separating the skin and the underlying tissue. Underlying facial muscles can then be tightened if required, before the skin is stitched into place along the original incision and any excess skin and fat removed.

In addition, we are proud to offer the cutting-edge, non-surgical fat grafting technique which transfers fat excised from another part of the body into the facial muscles resulting in a rejuvenated, smoother appearance. We also offer laser skin resurfacing treatments as another non-surgical option.

Our facelift surgeons at Cadogan Clinic are some of the best in the UK and will ensure any scarring is kept to a minimum and well hidden. The small scars will usually remain pink for a months before turning a less noticeable white. However, one of the benefits of standard facelift procedures is that much of the scarring left by face lift surgery is hidden above the hairline, and most people will not have major issues with scarring after a facelift.

During your initial consultation, your surgeon will give you pre-operative advice, however the most common preparations include:

Avoiding aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs and herbal supplements, which can increase bleeding. Also, if you're prone to high blood pressure, you might need to take blood pressure medication before a face-lift - this will be confirmed by your surgeon.

You'll need to bathe and wash your hair the night before and the morning of your face-lift.

Avoid eating. You'll be asked to avoid eating anything after midnight the night before your face-lift.

Arrange for help during recovery. As your facelift will be done via a day-case procedure, you should make plans for someone to drive you home after surgery and stay with you for at least one to two days.

Recovery time for a facelift wholly depends on the individual patient, however we usually advise that you take around two weeks off work following surgery as there will be bruising and swelling which may take around 10 days to subside. Elevation is recommended to reduce swelling.

If you don't live nearby, it will usually be a requiremend that you stay overnight in a nearby hotel that the clinic has good links with, as your surgeon will want to see you the next day. Your surgeon will recommend that you avoid exercise and any heavy lifting for a few weeks following your facelift surgery.

Facelift surgery at Cadogan Clinic starts from £9000, however this will depend on your particular case. This can only be determined during a consultation with your surgeon, and following that an accurate price can be quoted.

The results of a facelift will last for years and maintaining a healthy lifestyle will extend this further, as will various aesthetic treatments available at the clinic. A patient's individual ageing process will differ and the quality of your skin before your procedure will definitely have an effect on the lasting results of your facelift.

Taking care of your skin following surgery can also help maintain results. It is not uncommon for people to have minor touch ups years after their initial surgery. Sometimes very minimal maintence can keep the face looking fresh and youthful.

Most patients will go home on the day of surgery or spend one night in hospital. There will be a support bandage that applies pressure to the face for the first day. You may feel mild discomfort but your surgeon can provide painkillers for this and we recommend you apply ice packs to reduce swelling. Your face may be swollen and bruised for two weeks, after one week you can resume most activities but should avoid exercise and anything strenuous for one month. Your stitches will be removed within two weeks.

There are many 'non-surgical facelifts' available such as Ultherapy, threadlifts, anti-wrinkle injections, dermal fillers and much more- many of which we offer at Cadogan Clinic. These minimally invasive alternatives usually result in less pain, less chance of scarring, and a faster recovery for the patient as they can be carried out under local anaesthetic, as well as reduced costs. However, the results may not be as effective or last as long as a surgical procedure.

Face lift surgery is carried out regularly as Cadogan Clinic, and any risks are the same as with any other surgical procedure that involves a general anaesthetic. There are no specific risks to be concerned about, but your surgeon will explain the facelift procedure to you in detail.

As we age, our skin loses elasticity and volume which causes it to sag and look tired. A facelift is a way of tightening or 'lifting' the skin for a more refreshed look. There are many different types of facelift available at Cadogan Cosmetics, but for a full facelift you will require a general anaesthetic. The surgeon will make minimal incisions behind and in front of the ears and then reposition or 'lift' the skin to tighten it for a youthful look. It may be that you require drains for this operation and will need a one night stay in the hospital.

We use a variant of the general anaesthesia technique called TIVA (Total Intravenous Anaesthesia) that is delivered by our team of top anaesthetists. Intravenous delivery enables our anaesthetist team to monitor anaesthetic depth more closely via specialized computers to maintain an optimal level of anaesthesia. This means you will wake up feeling much better than with traditional alternatives and ready to go home shortly after.
