What is Abdominoplasty for Men?

Abdominoplasty for men, also known as a Male Tummy Tuck, is a surgical procedure that removes excess skin and fat from the abdomen and tightens the abdominal muscles for a firmer and more defined midsection.

This procedure caters specifically to men who, despite maintaining a healthy lifestyle and exercise routine, struggle with areas of fat and skin that do not improve with diet and exercise alone. This may include around the upper and lower abdomen as well as around the hips and the back.

Men opt for a Tummy Tuck after significant weight loss or the natural ageing process that can result in sagging skin around the abdomen. Exercise and diet typically aren’t enough to remove excess skin after losing weight or ageing.

The process involves an incision made across the lower abdomen through which the surgeon removes excess skin and fat and tightens the abdominal muscles.

Male Tummy Tuck surgery is tailored to the specific needs and goals of each patient, with consideration given to minimising the visibility of scars and achieving natural-looking results. Recovery time varies, but most men can return to work and light activities within a few weeks.

Abdominoplasty is the 6th most popular procedure for men according to the BAAPS Annual Audit in 2022.

Why Do People Have a Tummy Tuck for Men?

Patient concerns are individual and vary however some common reasons for considering Abdominoplasty are excess or sagging skin caused by weight loss, stomach muscle weakness which may have led to a hernia and uneven fat distribution caused by genetics or ageing.

During your consultation, your surgeon will discuss the different options that are available and what will treat your concerns most effectively. A Mini-Abdominoplasty (Mini Tummy Tuck) is a similar procedure to the full Abdominoplasty, although your surgeon will focus on the excess skin and fat in the lower abdomen only. Your surgeon may also suggest Liposuction for men, in order to remove any excess fat and achieve the best possible results.

A mens abdominoplasty focusses more on the appearance of a flat, toned stomach rather than creating and/or maintaining curves around the hips and waistline in female patients.

Who is the Ideal Candidate for a Tummy Tuck for Men?

The ideal candidate for a Tummy Tuck for men is someone who is in good general health but struggles with excess abdominal fat and skin that does not respond to diet and exercise.

Key characteristics of an ideal candidate include:

  • Stable Weight: Men who have reached and maintained a stable weight close to their ideal body weight are good candidates since significant weight fluctuations post-surgery can affect the results.
  • Excess Abdominal Skin: Ideal candidates often have loose, excess skin around the abdomen, typically due to significant weight loss or natural ageing, that cannot be tightened through exercise alone.
  • Abdominal Muscle Separation: Men experiencing separation of the abdominal muscles, leading to a protruding belly, can benefit significantly from a Tummy Tuck.
  • Realistic Expectations: Understanding the realistic outcomes of the surgery, including potential scars and recovery time, is crucial for satisfaction with the results.

What Are the Benefits of a Male Tummy Tuck?

The benefits of a Tummy Tuck for guys include.

  • Improved Body Contour: A Tummy Tuck for men improves the abdominal profile by removing excess skin and fat, resulting in a firmer and flatter abdomen.
  • Corrected Muscle Separation: The procedure can repair separated or weakened abdominal muscles, also called diastasis recti, which enhances core stability and strength.
  • Reduced Back Pain: A Tummy Tuck can alleviate lower back pain caused by poor posture or muscle imbalances by tightening the abdominal muscles.
  • Motivation to Live Healthy: The visible improvements after surgery often motivate men to maintain a healthy diet and regular exercise regimen, contributing to overall well-being.
  • Increased Self-Confidence: A more contoured waistline allows clothes to fit better, boosting confidence and comfort in patients. Achieving a desired physical appearance can also boost self-esteem and body image.
  • Long-Lasting Results: With a stable weight and healthy lifestyle, the results of a Male Tummy Tuck can be long-lasting, providing years of satisfaction.

Is There a Difference Between Tummy Tuck Surgery for Men vs Women?

Yes, there are notable differences between Tummy Tuck surgery for men vs women. The procedure is tailored to meet the unique anatomical and aesthetic goals of each gender.

  • Focus Areas: Men often seek a more defined, muscular abdominal appearance, sometimes aiming for the six-pack look. Meanwhile, women typically focus on achieving a slimmer, smoother abdomen post-pregnancy or weight loss.
  • Fat Types: Men typically accumulate more visceral fat than women which is directly addressed during a Tummy Tuck for guys.
  • Skin Elasticity: Men typically have thicker skin with more elasticity which affects the surgical technique and recovery process. Women, especially those who have undergone multiple pregnancies, could have stretched skin and muscles, requiring additional tightening.
  • Muscle Repair: Abdominoplasty for women often includes repairing the abdominal muscle separation caused by pregnancies. Male Abdominoplasty primarily focuses on contouring and defining the abdominal area (unless there has been an injury that requires the abdominal muscles to be tightened).
  • Incision Placement: Surgeons may place incisions differently for men and women to ensure that the resulting scars align well with natural body contours and are easily concealed under clothing or swimwear.

Tummy Tuck for Men Surgeons

We have invited a selection of the country's very best consultants to join us at the Cadogan Clinic so that you can be sure that whatever the nature of your treatment, you will be seeing one of the top practitioners in the country.

Tummy Tuck for Men Procedure

When you choose Cadogan Clinic for your Abdominoplasty, what can you expect and what will you need to do to prepare for your surgery.

Your surgical advisor will organise up to two face-to-face consultations with your surgeon at our cosmetic surgery centre of excellence to discuss your concerns, surgical options and your desired results. Our surgeon’s consultations are usually between 30-60 minutes and your surgeon will use this time to explain the best options to address your concerns and the results you can expect. Your surgeon will also talk you through the different types of Abdominoplasty to show which is the best option for you. This may include Mini Abdominoplasty or Extended Tummy Tuck. They will also discuss non-surgical options with you so you are aware of every option and how they can each address your concerns.

Our surgeons recommend writing down your questions before your consultation. This will ensure you feel fully prepared and are able to get the most from your consultation.

Your surgeon will also discuss your medical history, take the measurements they need and take photos for your medical record.

Following your consultation, your surgeon will write up your proposed treatment plan and send it to your patient advisor. They will then contact you to discuss the options your surgeon has suggested, the pricing and the next available dates. You will then have a mandatory two-week cooling-off period to consider the options that have been given to you, and whether you would like to go ahead with surgery.

If you choose to proceed with your Abdominoplasty, your surgeon will ask you to follow these steps to prepare for your surgery.

  • You will need to complete your pre-operative medical and psychological questionnaires. These will be reviewed by your surgeon, anaesthetist and nurses to make sure you are ready to undergo your Tummy Tuck.
  • You will need to stop smoking and vaping for at least six weeks before surgery to allow for a smooth and effective recovery.
  • You must avoid drinking alcohol in the 48 hours before your surgery.
  • For a week before your procedure, you shouldn’t take any anti-inflammatory medications such as ibuprofen and aspirin, or any herbal supplements as these can increase the risk of bleeding
  • You must have a chaperone organised to come and collect you after your surgery. This should be a family member or friend who can either drive you or accompany you in a taxi and stay with you for the first night
  • In the 6 hours before you arrive at the clinic, you mustn’t eat any solid food or consume any juice or milk (including tea or coffee). You can have sips of clear liquids (water, or black tea and coffee) up to 2 hours before you arrive at the clinic

When you arrive at the clinic on your surgery day, you will speak with your surgeon, anaesthetist and the nurses to ask any final questions, and to be prepared for surgery with any marking the surgeon may need to do. The nurses will also ask you to put on a surgical gown and compression stockings.

You will then be taken into theatre. Once you are comfortable, your anaesthetist will administer your general anaesthetic. All Abdominoplasties at Cadogan Clinic are carried out using TIVA (Total Intravenous Anaesthesia) which reduces the risk of post-operative sickness and nausea and allows for a faster initial recovery.

Your surgeon will then complete your Abdominoplasty. After the procedure is finished, you will wake up in our recovery ward, where a nurse will check your vital health signs such as your blood pressure, heart rate and temperature. Once you are awake and comfortable, you will be transferred to our ambulatory ward where you will have something to eat and drink.

When you are ready to be discharged, a nurse will talk you through any medication you need to take once you leave. Your chaperone will then come to collect you and you will leave.

The first few days following Abdominoplasty may be slightly uncomfortable and you may experience some pain. Many patients report a tight feeling across their abdomen, and it can be hard to move quickly. Your surgical team will have prescribed any medications you will require to keep you comfortable. You will be up and moving within a day and able to bathe normally in three days.

Following your surgery, you will be asked to wear a compression garment around your abdomen. This will support your midriff as well as reduce any swelling and protect your incisions. You will need to wear this garment for up to 8 weeks day and night.

You will have two post-operative appointments following your surgery. The first will be a week after your Abdominoplasty, with our nurses. They will assess your incisions, remove your stitches and explain how to look after your dressings and garments. The second appointment will be with your surgeon, six weeks after your procedure.

Your surgeon will discuss your recovery and results and will take some more photos. They will also explain anything you need to do going forward as part of your recovery. If you have any questions about your recovery, you will be able to contact our dedicated nursing team on the 24-hour helpline.

What is the Recovery Period for a Male Tummy Tuck?

The recovery period following a Male Tummy Tuck varies but most patients recover within 6 to 8 weeks after the procedure.

During this time your surgeon will ask you to:

  • Wear compression garments to reduce swelling and protect your incisions.
  • Avoid exercise and strenuous activity
  • Avoid lifting heavy weights

You will have an appointment with our nurses 1 week after your procedure to check your incisions and remove any sutures. 6 weeks after your surgery, you will have a follow up appointment with your surgeon to discuss your recovery and results.

Frequently Asked Questions

After a men's Tummy Tuck, you can expect a horizontal scar situated a few centimetres below your belly button, which can typically be concealed with underwear or swimwear. The length and visibility of the scar vary based on the extent of the surgery and individual healing.

While a Male Abdominoplasty tightens the abdominal muscles and removes excess skin and fat, the appearance of a six-pack depends on individual body fat percentage and muscle definition prior to surgery. Additional exercise and diet may be needed to achieve visible muscle definition.

As Male Abdominoplasty is usually considered a cosmetic procedure, it is rarely available through the NHS. It may be considered for NHS funding in instances where there is significant muscle damage or other medical concerns, however, the waiting lists are long and each case has to be reviewed by a number of people.

After a Tummy Tuck, you will need to wear a compression garment for at least the first six weeks. This helps reduce swelling, supports the abdominal area during healing and helps contour the body to its new shape. You should also wear loose-fitting clothing to maximise comfort and allow room for swelling and bandages.

A Tummy Tuck belt for men is a type of compression garment designed to support the abdominal area post-surgery. It aids in reducing swelling, offering comfort during recovery and ensuring the skin adheres properly to the underlying tissues for optimal healing and shaping results.

Liposuction is a cosmetic procedure that removes excess fat deposits from various parts of the body, including the abdomen, to reshape and contour those areas. It does not address excess skin or tighten the abdominal muscles.

A Tummy Tuck removes excess skin and fat from the abdomen and tightens the abdominal muscles for a firmer abdominal profile.

A Tummy Tuck and Liposuction can be combined for a procedure called a Lipoabdominoplasty. The Tummy Tuck removes excess skin and some fat from the abdomen whilst tightening the abdominal muscles if needed. The Liposuction removes fat deposits from the abdomen and the surrounding areas resulting in a contoured abdomen section.

A Tummy Tuck can cause patients to lose 1.4kg-2.3kg. A Mini Tummy Tuck can result in weight loss of around 0.8kg which comes from the skin and fat that’s removed.

Words from Our Founder

Mr. Bryan Mayou

Male abdominoplasty has become increasingly popular over the course of my five decade career as a plastic surgeon. The most common patient journey for this procedure is one marked by signficiant weight loss immediately prior to surgery or quite often these patients are making a visit to the Clinic after more significant bariatric weight loss surgery. This procedure beautifully addresses excess abdominal skin, muscle laxity and any remaining fat deposits, and significantly boosts confidence. It is not uncommmon to see it combined with other chest procedures such as gynaecomastia or male chest liposuction.

What Are the Risks of a Men’s Tummy Tuck?

A Men’s Tummy Tuck carries certain risks, similar to any major surgery. Understanding these potential complications will help you make an informed decision on the procedure.

Key risks include:

  • Infection: In some cases, infections can occur at the incision site and might require antibiotics or additional treatment.
  • Scarring: A Tummy Tuck surgery for men will result in a scar, typically around the belly button. The appearance of scars depends on individual healing processes and the surgeon's technique.
  • Blood Clots: Surgery increases the risk of blood clots, particularly in the legs, resulting in a condition called deep vein thrombosis.
  • Anaesthesia Complications: Reactions to anaesthesia, though carefully monitored, can occur and range from mild to severe.
  • Hematoma and Seroma: Accumulation of blood or fluid under the skin may require drainage and can affect healing.
  • Poor Wound Healing: Some men may experience delayed healing which impacts the overall recovery time and potentially the outcome.
  • Nerve Damage: Temporary or permanent changes in skin sensation may occur, particularly around the incision areas.

It’s important to discuss these risks with a board-certified plastic surgeon who has extensive experience in male abdominoplasty. Our team of expert surgeons at Cadogan Clinic conduct a thorough consultation with you to tailor the procedure to your specific needs and minimise potential complications. As a result, you will be fully informed about both the benefits and risks before proceeding with a male Tummy Tuck.
